Libby is one of the apps the library uses to provide downloadable books, audiobooks, and magazines to its users. When using Libby, you can choose whether to read/listen with an internet connection or download titles for offline use. If you’re not familiar with Libby, check out our intro article.
Wi-Fi Is Everywhere. Why Would I Download?
Many of us have access to an internet connection at all times. However, if you plan to enjoy content on an airplane or during a car trip, a steady connection can’t be guaranteed. Downloading ensures continued access, even in the middle of nowhere!
You may be concerned that downloading will take up too much space on your phone. However, unless your phone is nearly full, ebook and audiobook files shouldn’t be too large to handle. When your digital loan expires, the file is automatically deleted from your phone.
If you think downloading might be a good way to share an ebook with a friend, it won’t work. The files are digitally secured so that only the device that downloaded the file can read it. You would have to lend them your device or let them use your account to get access.
Downloading Digital Content
By default, Libby tries to download your book and audiobook loans when you are connected to Wi-Fi. You can tell if a title has been downloaded by looking at the icon next to it on your shelf. Downloaded ebooks/audiobooks have a card icon with a checkmark. Titles that have not been downloaded will show a cloud icon.

If you would like to change your downloading preferences, tap Menu
> Settings > Change Download Rules. These are the available options:

Magazines are not downloaded automatically, but you can download them using these instructions. When a magazine has been downloaded, it shows a checkmark icon. If not, it shows a three-dot icon.
