Why You Might Need a NY.Gov ID

If you have tried to do DMV business online, renew a professional license, apply for benefits, or interact with the Department of Taxation and Finance, chances are good that you have encountered the need for a NY.gov ID.

The NY.Gov ID provides a single point of service for a range of online government services, eliminating the need for multiple accounts.

Who Is Eligible for a NY.Gov ID?

The short answer is that everyone is eligible for a free account. All that’s needed is a valid email address. But if you don’t have any business to do with NYS government online, you may not need an account.

Here are descriptions of the three types of IDs, taken from the NY.gov ID website:

  • Personal IDs – for individuals who want to access New York State Agency services such as MyDMV or MyBenefits for personal use. Personal IDs can be set up directly by the user.
  • Government Employee IDs – for New York State and local government employees to conduct employee functions such as the Statewide Learning Management System (SLMS) or NYS Payroll Online. Government employee IDs are issued internally and must be set up by an agency human resources officer during the onboarding process.
  • Business IDs – for business organizations registered in New York State that want access to online services such as registering an LLC or registering for Unemployment Insurance. Business IDs can be set up directly by the organization.

Link Your MyDMV Account to Your NY.Gov ID

If you would like to do DMV business online, you will need to link a MyDMV account to your NY.Gov ID. Note that you must have a New York State license, permit, or non-driver ID to create a MyDMV account.

Step 1: Sign in to My.NY.gov

Step 2: On the NY.gov ID landing page, select the MyDMV button.

Step 3: Enter your personal information to sign up for MyDMV. You will need:

  • The 9-digit DMV ID Number and 8-or 10-digit Document number from your most recently issued New York State driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID.
  • The last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (Don’t have a Social Security Number? See what to do if you do not have a Social Security Number).
  • Your date of birth.
  • The ZIP code currently on file with the DMV (if you moved, you can update your address information after you log in).

After verifying this information, you will be asked to set up Shared Secrets to securely access your account in the future. If you access MyDMV in the future using your NY.gov ID, you will not need to verify your personal information again.
