An abstract render of AI in cyberspace

Is AI Taking Over? What You Need to Know

Originally, this post was supposed to be a companion to the class I taught this fall, pointing to the materials I presented in class. In reality, that information was outdated the moment I presented it. AI is being developed so fast, it’s hard to keep a knowledge base updated. The focus of this article, then, will be to provide links to AI resources that are updated regularly.

To answer the question I asked in the post title – no, AI isn’t taking over in the way that it will make humans obsolete. Historically, humans have felt threatened by new technology, whether they understand how it works or not. There is even a term for it – technophobia! If you’re old enough to remember when computers started to be used widely, you may have experienced this. More likely, AI will end up as a companion feature in most tools we use, and humans will adapt around it.

Staying Up to Date

Even though AI news is changing all the time, you can stay up to date by following a few websites dedicated to following and writing about AI trends. Here are my three favorite sites for keeping current:

For extra credit, here is a running list of AI tools, tagged by category.

Fast Facts

  • Are students using AI to write papers? Yep
  • Is there software that can reliably identify AI-generated content? Yes and no. There are detection tools, but they can be foiled by using other tools that will make your AI-generated content sound more human to escape detection.
  • Are AI tools available for every industry? Just about
  • Will AI take my job? Probably not. When computers came on the scene, people thought the same thing. The reality is that some jobs will go away, but others will be created by the new AI industry.
