How to Get Digital Content in Your Language with Hoopla

For a librarian, purchasing books in a foreign language can be difficult. Summaries, reviews, and all of the metrics we use to gauge whether to purchase a title are most often in a language we can’t read. Add a diverse community that wants materials in multiple languages, and serving that need becomes even trickier. As a result, we rarely have a solid offering of items in any language beyond English. Thankfully, our Hoopla subscription comes with lots of books, audiobooks, music, and videos in a variety of languages.

Which Languages Are Available?

Hoopla lists over 100 available languages. Sixteen of those languages boast over 1,000 available titles across a variety of formats. Unfortunately, not all languages are available in all formats, but the odds are good that you will find titles you would never see in our physical library (due to budget and space constraints).

Here are some links to the offerings in languages that are often asked about:

How Do I Find What’s Available in My Language?

Browsing by language is easy, once you know the “secret.” The secret is the “Advanced Search” link in small print under the search box. Click on that to open more options:

On the next screen, use the dropdown arrow next to the language fields to see a list and click on your desired language:

Optionally, you can select a format (eBook, music, movie, etc.) or fill in any of the other fields before submitting. If you already know you are only interested in one format, select it before submitting because the results page does not have a filter to narrow down from there. Scroll to the bottom of the advanced search page and click “Submit.”

Select any title from the results list to learn more about it or check it out.
