As you may know, the Libby app offers digital magazines to our patrons for checkout. Did you know you can now subscribe to a magazine to receive a notification and have the latest issue automatically delivered to the magazine rack on your shelf in the app?
If you haven’t heard about Libby yet, check out this introductory post to catch up.
The “Subscribe” Button
The “subscribe” button can be found in a few places in Libby. When you see it, you can tap it to subscribe to that magazine.
- When you close a magazine you are reading
- In search results and library lists
- A magazine’s details screen
- Next to the magazine in a browsing list
After tapping Subscribe, select a “Notify Me” smart tag for your magazine subscriptions. Then select a notification option (see below).
What Happens When You Subscribe
When you subscribe to a magazine, the latest issue will automatically appear on your shelf’s magazine rack in Libby when it becomes available. To view, tap the shelf icon at the bottom of the screen:
You can also receive a notification when new issues become available. Upon subscription, you will be prompted to choose one of the following types of notifications:
- Ignore (no notification)
- Menu badge (shows up as a dot on the three-line menu icon)
- Push notification (Android and iOS only)
- Email notice (on a desktop or when push notifications are disabled in the app)
If you are not prompted to choose a notification type, you can check your current settings by tapping the menu icon (three lines) at the bottom of the screen. Select “settings” then “manage notifications.” Enter your preferences.
Special Note on Subscribing from a Browser
By default, users who enjoy Libby with a browser receive in-app notifications, which appear in the menu. If you would like to receive email notices instead:
- Tap the Menu icon, then select “settings”, then “manage notifications.”
- Select “Email notice” for any event you’d like an email about
- Choose “fix this?” next to “you need to specify an email address…” at the bottom of the menu.
- Enter your email address and select “next.”
