If you use an iPhone, you may already have used AirDrop or AirPlay. These built-in apps allow iPhone users to share content quickly between devices. Android phones have similar features, which we will cover in a later post.
When to Use AirDrop vs AirPlay
- Use AirDrop when you want to send files to someone nearby
- Use AirPlay when you want to display or play content on another device
What Is AirDrop?
AirDrop lets you wirelessly send files, like photos, videos, contacts, or documents, to nearby Apple devices. No cables, email attachments, or messaging apps required. Before you get started, make sure both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (Settings > Bluetooth) are turned on.

- Swipe up from the bottom (older iPhones)
- Press and hold the network settings box (where Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are)
- Tap AirDrop and choose one of these options:
- Receiving Off – No one can send you files
- Contacts Only – Only people in your contacts can send files
- Everyone (for 10 minutes) – Anyone nearby can send files
How to Send Files with AirDrop
- Open the app with the file you want to share (e.g., Photos)
- Tap the Share button

- Tap AirDrop
- Select the person or device you want to send to
When the other person taps Accept, the file will transfer instantly.
Tips for AirDrop
- Keep devices close together (within about 30 feet).
- Make sure the recipient’s device is unlocked.
- If you don’t see the other device, ask them to switch to “Everyone” temporarily.
What Is AirPlay?
AirPlay lets you stream or mirror content from your iPhone or iPad to another screen or speaker—like a TV or smart speaker.

- Tap it and choose a compatible device (like a smart TV or speaker)
Your content will start playing on that device.
How to Mirror Your Screen
If you want to show everything on your screen:
- Open Control Center
- Tap Screen Mirroring

- Select your TV or AirPlay-compatible device
To stop mirroring, go back to Control Center and tap Stop Mirroring.
Tips for AirPlay
- Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
- If nothing shows up, check that the receiving device supports AirPlay
- For best performance, keep devices close to your Wi-Fi router
Summary
AirDrop and AirPlay are designed to make sharing as easy as possible, whether you’re sharing photos with a friend or streaming a movie to your TV.
