Digital Legacy engraved on a headstone

How to Name Digital Executors and Legacy Contacts

It’s not easy to think about end-of-life issues, but have you considered what will happen to your digital presence when you pass on? Who will manage your Bitcoin, retire your social media accounts, and archive or distribute your digital files? Many folks assume their will’s executor will handle this, but as it turns out, executors are not given this power by default.

There are a couple of ways to handle this situation. If you have a fairly involved digital presence, you could specifically name a digital executor in your will. Otherwise, you may want to explore which of your accounts offers a “legacy contact” option. Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, and other major platforms will allow you to name a person to manage those platforms for you after you are gone.

Tech-Talk has written a great article highlighting how to set a legacy contact in most of the major tech platforms. If you are prompted for a username and password after clicking the link, both are “colonie” (without quotes).
