If you’re using the Libby app on a tablet, smartphone, or Kindle Fire, it’s easy to search for and download digital content all on a single device. There is an extra step if you’re using an e-ink (black and white) Kindle that can’t use the Libby app. If you’d like to enjoy library e-books on your e-ink Kindle, read on.
Sending an E-Book to Kindle at Checkout
You can send a book to a Kindle from the Libby app on any device, or using an internet browser at https://libbyapp.com/library/uhls. For instructions on how to check out a title, see our Libby intro post.
Step 1: Once you have checked out the item, go back to the item on your “shelf” and select “Read With…”
Step 2: The next screen gives the option to send to Kindle. When you select it, you will be prompted to sign in to your Amazon account.
Step 3: Once logged in, click/tap the yellow “get library book” to send the title to your Kindle(s). The next time your Kindle connects to Wi-Fi, the book will be downloaded.

Kindle Limitations
Not all titles in the OverDrive/Libby catalog are compatible with e-ink Kindles for various reasons:
- Audiobooks can not be played on e-ink Kindles.
- If you have downloaded the title in ePub format on another device, you can’t send it to the Kindle unless you check it out again.
- Some e-books don’t have a Kindle format available. Available formats are listed in the title details that appear when the book cover is clicked/tapped (as shown).

Summary
If you prefer to enjoy e-books on your e-ink Kindle, you can send items checked out in OverDrive/Libby to your device with a quick extra step. If you have more questions about using library e-books with your Kindle, or you’d like to see a video demonstrating this process, check out the Libby help page for e-ink Kindles.
