Last week, we covered how casting allows Android users to share content to a second screen. This week, we’ll take a closer look at how to share files with another device using NFC.
NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It allows two devices to communicate when they are held very close together. NFC works quickly and requires very little setup.
You may already use NFC for tap-to-pay apps like Apple Pay and Google Wallet. Older Android devices may not have NFC, but for those that do, it can be a handy way to send files without texting or emailing them.
Turn on NFC
Both the sending and receiving devices need NFC turned on to share files. Both devices must also be unlocked.
Start by opening your phone’s settings app. Depending on your phone’s brand, it may appear under Connected Devices, Connections, or Wireless Settings. If you don’t see any of these options, use the search bar in your settings app to search for NFC.
Toggle the switch to turn on NFC.
Sharing Files
With both devices unlocked, open the photo, document, website, or contact you wish to share. In the menu, tap Share. Next, tap Quick Share (or Nearby Share).
Place the backs of the phones close together or select the destination device from the list. You may hear a sound or feel a vibration when the phones connect. Tap the on-screen confirmation message on the destination device to complete the transfer.
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with NFC sharing, try these troubleshooting steps:
- Remove thick phone cases
- Keep devices close together
- Make sure both phones support NFC
- Enable Nearby Share if available
- Keep screens unlocked during sharing
Need to share with an iPhone user? Ask the other person to set AirDrop to “Everyone for 10 minutes.”
Safety and Security
Wireless sharing is convenient, but it’s important to stay safe.
Follow these tips:
- Only connect to trusted TVs and devices
- Turn off NFC when not using it or set it to require the screen lock
- Avoid accepting files from strangers
- Rename your phone so it’s easy to recognize
- Keep your software updated
